The members of our International Advisory Board (pictured above) are at the very top of this list.

Last week we met with them again at ESADE’s Sant Cugat campus to discuss strategic goals for the coming years. Their feedback and recommendations always bring a critical perspective and help us to move forward. We always do our best to include their recommendations in our strategy.

Being open-minded and welcoming fresh ideas are two attitudes that we try to embrace and carry with us at ESADE because we believe that critical thinking is a very valuable skill that can make a big difference in business.

One of our ESADE MBA students James Doherty has been putting his business school knowledge into practice blogging for the Financial Times for the last two months. He is one of the 27 MBAs from business schools around the globe chosen by the FT to blog on their experience of studying for an MBA.

The business students all have sharp writing skills and seem very committed to this project. The FT MBA blog is bursting with activity with a new story – sometimes even two – getting published practically every day.

Some of the topics these MBA bloggers choose to write about are quite disruptive and include reflections that might make readers question things. Among the posts are topics like the importance of having a strategy in business as well as in real life why diversity is important to a group’s performance or why choosing a business school should not only be based on rankings.

They say doing an MBA is a life changing experience. These students for sure are doing a great job demonstrating this through their stories.

The FT’s MBA blog is a valuable resource to get inside MBAs’ minds their daily activities and challenges their expectations their concerns their dreams. Congratulations to all the MBAs that are keeping this initiative alive. Definitely highly recommended reading.

The person sitting next to me is Adolf Vilanova who recently returned to ESADE for a special occasion: We wanted to see him again to thank him personally for his invaluable contribution to our institution over so many years.

Adolf Vilanova joined ESADE in the early seventies. He was a very generous and dedicated professor and also a very innovative thinker. I’m sure his teachings inspired many of our students in the classroom during his more than 30 years at ESADE. Adolf set the basis of an innovative family business model which has been taught in our classrooms since 1985 when he first introduced it to a group of 5th-year undergraduates.

His teachings have become an on-going holistic role model for us both in the classroom and in our research activities and have inspired many of our professors and researchers to advance knowledge in the area of family businesses. One such Professor is Alberto Gimeno (standing left in the photo) who has been able to further develop Adolf’s teachings and create a new framework towards a better understanding of family businesses and the problems they face. To tackle these challenges amongst other things we are hosting the 2nd Global Step Summit which will be held at ESADE in November. It will bring together many experts from around the globe to promote knowledge on the challenges family businesses face in today’s globalised world. Hopefully new innovative ideas will also be born out of this event.

I’m sure Adolf’s teaching legacy will remain with us at ESADE and continue to inspire many family business owners and new entrepreneurs in the years to come. The future is bright.

We wanted to create something at ESADE that would resemble this space to encourage our students to become entrepreneurs; and so we founded EGarage a year ago.

This month we’re celebrating its 1st anniversary with good news. The space is bursting with activity – we’ve organised over 250 sessions workshops and classes throughout the year which have been attended by more than 6600 participants. We also invited many of our alumni who have become successful entrepreneurs because we wanted them to show our students that everything is possible when you believe in yourself. Alumni entrepreneurs are a real source of inspiration for students who want to make entrepreneurship their career path.

Many of our students have expressed their interest in entrepreneurship and EGarage and some of them have already started to put their ideas into writing to develop innovative business plans. For them EGarage has become a meeting point to bring their business ideas forward.

There’s still a long way to go but seeing the results the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute has achieved in just one year is encouraging. We will carry on trying to make EGarage a space where new ideas are born. And hopefully in a few years’ time the students that are now at EGarage trying to set up their own companies will one day come back as alumni to tell their success stories to new generations of students.

The meaningfulness of self-knowledge

Who am I? How do I express myself? How do I communicate? Being able to answer these three questions with confidence is at the core of a meaningful life. This reflection comes from a book we recently presented at ESADE which collects the thoughts of and pays tribute to Jaume Filella former Director General of ESADE from 1986-1992.

Jaume Filella is what I call a visionary; as the book title suggests a thinker who makes you think. Anyone interested in self-knowledge and understanding the complexity of human beings should read this book. It teaches valuable life lessons.

The central theme of the book is the exploration of the three levels of consciousness that we as human beings should master if we are to live life – rather than life living us.

The first level ‘Who am I’ is about connecting with your inner self to understand that you are valuable and that you have to be compassionate with yourself and understand your abilities your qualities and your needs. If you achieve this level of compassion then everything flows and defects become only ill-used virtues as Filella puts it in his book. Sometimes what we consider a negative trait in ourselves turns out to be what other people appreciate most. Life is not black or white.

The second level ‘How do I express myself’ is about understanding that every moment of our lives is an opportunity to show who we are and to give the best of ourselves. When we are in harmony with ourselves and the people around us we live in a state of plenitude in which we flow and which provides us with wellbeing and happiness.

The third level of consciousness is ‘How do I communicate’. Communication is not simply an exchange of information; it goes beyond contact between people. It challenges you in that it questions you about what you feel or think. Good communication as Filella calls it is the transmission of knowledge with a sense of questioning.

Jaume Filella’s reflections on internal self-awareness are also part of our educational model at ESADE which stresses that good business leadership requires the development of four dimensions: the professional; the ethical; the personal; the internal.

Self-knowledge is a very important skill for leadership. How can we lead teams of people if we don’t know ourselves? Cultivating our inner dimension leads to clarity of thought self-knowledge and good management.

And that’s something that today’s world really needs. 2013 is a very meaningful year for ESADE because our Law School is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. I’ll never forget the first graduating class of 96 students back in 1994. They were hopeful of changing the future. I’m sure many of them have achieved their dreams by now and are doing great things for society.

The creation of the Law School in 1993 marked a turning point for ESADE because it expanded our academic horizons. Twenty years after its foundation the School has grown at a steady pace and our programmes have consistently made it into the top rankings. 80% of our Bachelor of Law students find work before finishing the programme and 90% of them find their first jobs thanks to our career services. Forging this path was not easy; it is the result of hard work commitment and perseverance.

Over the years we have also overcome several major challenges such as adapting our portfolio to the demands of globalisation and complying with Bologna’s new requirements. We became one of Spain’s pioneering institutions to adapt our undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes to the new European standards. These were crucial times for the School. Another vital moment was when we expanded our academic network and exchange programmes throughout Europe USA Canada Latin America and Asia to offer our students a truly international experience and prepare them as international-calibre lawyers. We also became the first and only Spanish Law School to be a member of the Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) one of the most innovative initiatives in the legal field linked to globalisation. The School is also the only institution in Spain to offer the Joint Certificate in International and Business Law (Themis Programme) a pioneering programme that provides an international perspective on business law.

The Law School’s first Dean Antonio Marzal Fuentes once said that one of the major challenges we faced as an institution lay in finding the right path to enable us to provide answers to society’s demands. His reflection has accompanied the Law School throughout these last twenty years and I’m sure it will continue to do so for many years to come.

Joan Rigol Banele Levin Gloriann López Filippo Checcucci and their coach ESADE Professor Alberto Gimeno (pictured left) are an excellent example of teamwork.

Case competitions are a great challenge because they demand not only that participants think outside the box but that they do so as quickly and skilfully as possible. Joan Banele Gloriann and Filippo only had three hours to prepare each of the four cases and barely 20 minutes to present their results. Convincing the jury – a panel of renowned experts from the United States Canada and Europe – was no easy task. The ESADE students were competing against 15 other teams of bright students from some of the best universities around the globe.

In their comments the judges noted that the team’s innovative methodology – learnt in ESADE classrooms – was one of the main reasons for their victory. Congratulations to the MBA team for their achievement. We wish them many more to come.

I look forward to receiving any feedback you might have.

I’d like to take advantage of this post to share some of my thoughts on the subject. And I’ll begin by reaffirming the urgent need for women to take a larger and more decisive role in leadership and responsibility within organisations. We need to take this challenge on board. True we’re making headway in this respect but it’s still too slow; and any progress that is made is thanks to the individual merit of those women (and men) who believe in diversity within their firms.

But while I reaffirm this need I want to share my concerns about the uncertain effectiveness of imposing a quota for women by obligation by decree by order of the European Commission. It’s true that a male culture still prevails in some companies. But I don’t consider legally forcing women onto boards of directors to be an effective approach to the matter when the key lies in getting diversity at management levels of the company where the real decisions are taken.

I was the only woman in my class when I was studying at ESADE. Fortunately today’s reality has changed a lot: Nowadays female students are in the majority on our undergraduate degree programmes. I regularly talk to them and I can see in their eyes a healthy ambition to triumph in the splendid professional future that lies ahead of them.

And when I think about their future I confirm the pressing need for our society to help them believe in themselves. To recognise that they too can and should have the opportunity to believe in and progress in their own professional future. They should not doubt themselves when they have to grit their teeth and take firm steps in their career. They should not have to give up on rising through the ranks of their respective professions because it’s impossible to reconcile their profession with their personal and family life. It cannot be that many women of an age in which they are reaching the peak of their professional careers don’t have the same management development opportunities that would allow them to a large extent to gain access to real management positions. Quite simply our society cannot afford to take this attitude.

Could the introduction of a quota policy for company boards help to reverse this situation? It might. But it’s not the only solution.

And how can we get women into management positions where the day-to-day business decisions are made? Some organisations have already done this. They are the ones with a new more flexible and revamped ecosystem; the ones that effectively implement codes of good governance; the ones that have a more balanced schedule with specific programmes and career development for women.

In other words if we include more women on boards of directors just to comply with the law – but don’t actually give them any real management responsibilities – all we’ll really be creating is ‘quota women’. And I like many others don’t want to be a ‘quota woman’.

But how can their teachings influence our daily professional lives? Last week we held a very meaningful event at ESADE that provided answers to this question and beyond. It was the presentation of The Odyssey of Management a book written by our Honorary Professor Lluís Pugès who was for many years Dean and Director General of ESADE. Professor Pugès’ contribution to ESADE was invaluable and marked a turning point in the history of the institution. His role in teaching students the importance of humanistic management was crucial and so were his visionary thoughts on education which led him to become one of the driving forces behind ESADE’s efforts to promote international education. He was also a visionary in that he was one of the founders of The Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS).

The title of his new book The Odyssey of Management was inspired by Ulysses’ long trip home after the Trojan War. Ulysses like many people today had to face lots of difficult situations before succeeding in his mission. Through memorable quotes and experiences from the classics Professor Pugès’ new book outlines the qualities a good leader must have and should never forget especially when times get tough. Knowing yourself listening to others being perseverant being aware of your own limits finding internal peace learning from failure appreciating what you have and being faithful to yourself are some of the traits outlined in the book that ancient scholars considered to be key virtues for a more fulfilling life. Professor Pugès promoted these virtues within ESADE for many decades and we will continue to do our best to promote them for many years to come. Values and ethics should always be an integral part of leadership. The classics are and will surely continue to be an unconditional fount of wisdom.

Writing it in a way that really stands out from the rest and becomes a significant contribution in the field is an even harder task. One of our students from the PhD in Management Sciences Programme Ricardo Malagueño (pictured second from right) has been among the five awardees to receive Ramon Llull University’s Extraordinary Doctorate Award. The prize is given every year to students who have excelled in their thesis and demonstrated their ability to conduct independent original and significant research.

Ricardo’s thesis examines how top management’s use of accounting practices contributes to improving organisational performance in organisations. His research suggests that companies facing high levels of environmental dynamism will fail to profit from the use of accounting tools. It also demonstrates how different management styles in accounting can bring higher levels of creativity and innovation. Ricardo’s findings make for a significant contribution to the field of management sciences.

These types of awards are necessary and show Ramon Llull University’s commitment to research excellence. Research should always be a priority in higher education regardless of the economic environment. Investing in research is crucial not only to contribute to a country’s economic growth but also to staying competitive and tackling the ‘big questions’ to improve the future of society. We wish Ricardo all the best in his future research endeavours and hope that his contribution will be one of many more to come.

Lionel Barber editor of the Financial Times came to ESADE this week to deliver an address on the euro crisis on a very special day for us: the opening ceremony for the 2012-2013 academic year.

We start this new academic year at ESADE in a context that is extremely difficult and uncertain. The economic and social crisis has reached its fifth year and its negative impact on individuals families and institutions continues to spiral. These are hard times for Spain.

Lionel’s speech about the euro crisis was very powerful full of strong well-argued messages that invited global reflection and kept its distance from the blaming game that dominates the political debate in Europe. If we want to get out of this crisis before it’s too late we need to start taking serious action. Procrastination will only exacerbate the damage and the consequences of inaction may be devastating. We cannot afford for this to happen.

Today what we need more than ever as Lionel said is political courage and decisive action. We should not forget what John F. Kennedy once said: In a crisis be aware of the danger but recognise the opportunity. Europe can get back on track. We just need to remember that if we work together towards the same goals we’ll achieve them much faster.

See the full text of Lionel Barber’s speech at the Financial Times

Good News for Entrepreneurs in Barcelona

I’ve always admired entrepreneurs – their ability to step out of their comfort zone and take risks their creativity their capacity to overcome adversity their visionary attitude. They say that true entrepreneurs never quit and that they always find the strength to keep going even when times get really tough. Stories of entrepreneurs are among my favourite because behind a great idea there’s always a profound story to tell.

The other day I came across a few of these stories while reading the newspaper. It was an interesting article about new technology-based start-ups in Barcelona and how the city is becoming a pole of attraction for entrepreneurs in the IT sector. Among these new start-ups was King a social games platform that has settled in Barcelona with an initial investment of 2 million euros and Kantox an online currency exchange platform that saves users paying bank charges. Kantox was co-founded by Antonio Rami a former ESADE student (Lic&MBA 09). His visionary business idea which has just raised one million euros in funding is a clear demonstration that successful innovation can come from anywhere in the world and that Barcelona is a good platform to push ideas forward.

Another featured story was an innovative taxi finder app business which has just closed an investment round of 3 million euros. Perhaps the most interesting part of this start-up is how it was created thanks to the push given in the business accelerator Inspirit Labs founded by entrepreneur Didac Lee. His high-tech accelerator has fuelled many new technology-based start-ups in Barcelona – Spamina Zyncro Conzentra and The eTailers among others – which are expanding through major venture capital investments.

Did you know that every year more than a thousand new start-ups are created in the city of Barcelona through the City Council’s business incubator Barcelona Activa? Today Barcelona is home to some of the most well-established start-ups with a worldwide presence. The city is becoming a cradle for digital entrepreneurs and I believe that business schools in one way or another are contributing to this growth and emergence of new start-ups.

If I had to convey a message to an entrepreneur who was just starting out this is what I would tell him or her: Find the courage to pursue your dreams believe in yourself when you go through hard times and don’t give up. The future is full of possibilities.

ESADE Alumni: Builders and Protagonists of the Future

Yesterday more than 1000 ESADE graduates came together for the 6th ESADE Alumni Annual Conference. Madrid’s Palacio de Congresos was abuzz with excitement and positive energy: excitement at reuniting with old friends and classmates and positive energy because our guest speakers – Spanish Minister of Economy Luis de Guindos Telefónica CEO José M. Álvarez-Pallete and ESADE Alumni President Miguel Trias – inspired us to look ahead to a future rich with opportunity that holds a place for every one of us.

Time and again two themes emerged: innovation and entrepreneurship two pillars essential to stimulating the national economy and repositioning Spain’s companies and professionals on the world stage. But there’s more to it than that. As José M. Álvarez-Pallete noted in his talk on initiatives such as Wayra we need innovation and entrepreneurship to drive transformation and growth.

Many of our alumni take the leap and commit to an idea – their idea. To be sure launching a business means taking risks and investing time and money. But with hard work enthusiasm and motivation these professionals have defied their main competitor – themselves – and made their dreams come true. I’m talking about Manel Adell of Desigual Antonio Rami of Kantox Andrea Lisbona of Touchland María Alegre of Chartboost Jacinto Roca of Wuaki.tv Pere Costa of Bicentury Miquel Àngel Bonachera of AB-BIOTICS José Manuel Villanueva of Privalia… and many others.

In fact yesterday’s participants included José Manuel Villanueva’s business partner Lucas Carné as well as Miguel Silva who co-founded Blusens. ESADE’s Javier Santiso in a vibrant talk entitled “Spain 3.0” discussed his origins challenges and successes. I came away with two insights about entrepreneurs: their passion and their ability to say NO to fear.

Like these entrepreneurs many of you have found support at ESADE thanks to our faculty experts and professionals as well as initiatives such as the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute ESADECREAPOLIS EGarage and our networking events.

Did you know that ESADE BAN has raised more than 20 million euros to finance Start Up Spain? Through this excellent initiative and others Javier and his team have showcased Spain’s entrepreneurial capacity. I am so grateful for their steadfast commitment to Spanish entrepreneurs and the innovation economy.

Businesspeople and entrepreneurs: we are dedicated to people like you. At ESADE you can share and develop ideas and embark on new journeys. At this hub of education and knowledge you can acquire skills for today’s globalised world and learn to shape your own future.

Why predicting climate change can be good for business

A few days ago I received an email from the founder of Fahrenheit Risk International Sergi Corbatera. He had attended my Entrepreneurship classes two years ago and went on to found the company after graduating from ESADE (Lic&MDE 2011). His business idea is interesting. The company offers tools for businesses to manage the financial risks derived from climate change.

Apparently climate change can have an impact on businesses and more than one would think. Around 80% of the world’s global economic activity depends on the weather which means that any sector of the economy can be affected by climate change in one way or another. Sergi’s idea is interesting for many businesses and it covers a market niche in Europe. The company is growing quickly and it has recently signed an alliance with Weather Trends International to offer European companies a system to forecast the weather a year in advance with 80% accuracy.

Sergi is a good example of an entrepreneur who embraces innovation. We wish him every success in his future endeavours.

If I were unemployed

I was recently asked by a journalist what I would do if I were unemployed. That’s not an easy question to answer especially in Spain where the unemployment rate affects more than 20% of the active population. Here is what I told him.

If I were unemployed I would ask for advice from my family and closest friends and would find out about the tools that could help me to track down the best opportunities.

I would ask for solidarity with the people that are unemployed and would be sensitive about the social consequences unemployment involves for families.

I would set myself a clear goal. Some people have found that the solution has been to pursue their unfulfilled dreams while others have found that the way ahead was to become entrepreneurs and start up their own businesses. Clear goals are at the core of great achievements.

I would also try to use this period to pursue further academic training to enhance my career.

I would try to find people who are in a similar situation and develop our creativity to find a solution together.

If I were unemployed the last thing I would do is try to play the hero and go through this period alone.

When someone spends months or even years out of work it’s easy for them to feel down. If I were unemployed I would try not to lose confidence in myself. I would try to find the right environment in which to regain trust in myself. And I’d try to remember that if I didn’t find a job it doesn’t mean it’s my fault.

New hope for cancer patients

This week I made a long-distance call to the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York that was full of hope. The person on the other side of the line was Josep Domingo Domenech a graduate of ESADE’s Hospital Management Programme (DSIS 2004). Josep (pictured right) and his colleague Carlos Cordón-Cardo (left) have just made a crucial discovery that brings new hope to cancer patients. They have identified a new type of cancer stem cells that are resistant to chemotherapy in prostate cancer patients. These are big words—the discovery could be the Achilles’ heel of cancer.

This kind of news is an honour for ESADE because it reflects the diversity of our alumni and their commitment to excellence. Josep has chosen to dedicate his life to improving people’s health. He told me that his training at ESADE helped him to broaden his management skills which are very important for researchers. His work highlights the importance of training innovative and socially responsible leaders that strive for a better future. Congratulations Josep.
